Chris John Retains WBA Featherweight Title

Posted by Donny | Sunday, March 01, 2009

Indonesia's Chris "The Dragon" John (picture) retained his title and remained undefeated by fighting to a draw with United States' hometown hero Rocky Juarez in the World Boxing Association (WBA) featherwight title bout at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

All three judges scored the fight 114-114 after all three gave the 11th and 12th round to Juarez, calling it a draw to leave Chris John unbeaten with the crown after his American debut and Juarez still winless in his world title bouts.

"I thought I won the fight," Chris John said. "What can I say? I won by points, but, what can I say? He's a tough fighter. He showed his strength in the last rounds."

Chris John went to 42-0 with two draws while Juarez had his first draw after 28 wins and four losses, his only losses and the draw coming in his title bouts.

Juarez staggered Chris John in the last seconds of the 11th round and tagged the champion with a left hook one minute into the last round and the two traded hard punches to the final bell as the crowd screamed in delight.

"I knew in the later rounds I had to pick it up. I went hard in the later rounds," Juarez said. "I thought I won the fight."

Chris John threw almost 400 more punches but the 29-year-old Semarang, Central Java, resident was denied a ninth win in a row.

"I thought I won the fight. I gave up the middle rounds, but it was a great show," Juarez said. "I wanted to bring the title to my hometown. He fought a good smart fight, but it was my fault in the middle rounds that I lost."

Both fighters began with a fast, intense pace. Juarez worked to Chris John's body while the Indonesian answered with a variety of jabs and solid rights, swelling Juarez's left eye in a third round where Chris John picked up the pace.

Chris John opened a cut over Juarez's left eye in the fifth round and used superior footwork to elude the Sydney Olympic silver medalist time and again, coming at Juarez from different angles and asserting control of the fight.

Juarez pressed the attack in the eighth round but John answered in the ninth with great flurries, hammering the challenger with an inside right to the head and a powerful left uppercut in his best combination. Before the closing rounds, Chris John seems to be a clear winner, but in the last two rounds, all three judges awarded Juarez with victories in their scores causing Juarez and "The Dragon" to tie in one of Juarez's best fights of his career.

"I might have given up some of the middle rounds. That's my fault," Juarez said. "The cut had a little to do with it. I just laid back in the middle rounds."

Chris John, who's also a former member of Indonesian national wushu team, would not rule out a rematch but served notice, "I'm ready for all."

In the main event match, Mexico's Juan Manuel Marquez defeated reigning International Boxing Organization (IBO) Lightweight Champion and former WBA, International Boxing Federation (IBF) and World Boxing Organization (WBO) Lightweight Champion Juan Diaz by knockout.

Diaz pressed the action early in the bout as the two exchanged punches at a rapid pace. Diaz opened a cut above Marquez's right eye in the fifth round and looked to be wearing down the elder Marquez, but Marquez responded by opening a gash above Diaz's right eye and stunning him with a left hook before the end of the eighth round.

Marquez landed two hard rights to Diaz's face in a three-punch combination that knocked Diaz to the canvas with 35 seconds remaining in the ninth round. Diaz rose, but seconds later, Marquez followed with a right uppercut to the chin that knocked him down for the second time.

Referee Rafael Ramos waved an end to the fight after two minutes and 40 seconds of the ninth round. With the victory, Marquez defended his Ring Magazine lightweight title and claimed the IBO, WBO, and WBA lightweight titles.

Chris "The Dragon" John outpointed Japanese challenger Hiroyuki Enoki to successfully defend his WBA featherweight title for the 10th time in a mandatory fight at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan on Friday. By defending his title for the 10th time in a row, Chris John become a Super Champion.

The Indonesian boxer took control from the outset and won a unanimous decision in the 12-round fight by scores of 118-110, 118-110 and 117-111. This was Enoki's first shot at a world title.

"Enoki was a tough customer but I felt I had him after about five rounds," Chris John told the reporters. "I was in total control of the fight and the judges agreed."

Enoki, who lost for the first time in his 30 professional bouts, paid tribute to the champion.

"He's a great champion," said Enoki. "He's strong but he's very cool too. He made me look bad but I gave it my best shot."

Chris John improved his record to 42-0 with one draw. Enoki dropped to 27-1 with two draws.

World Boxing Association (WBA) Featherweight Champion Chris "The Dragon" John will defend his title against Japanese contender Hiroyuki Enoki on Friday night October 24 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. After sweeping aside the Japanese challenger, Chris John has big fight plans ahead of him in the United States.

The negotiations are underway for the Indonesian boxer to face American Rocky Juarez in the USA in January 2009, on a Golden Boy Promotion. There is a possibility that Jesus Chavez could face Michael Katsidis at lightweight in the co-feature.

"Of course I want to fight in America," said Chris John. "I want all boxing fans to be able to see me in the ring. I just want to fight the best fighters in the world and by going to the United States, I can fight the best. I watched Rocky Juarez' last fight with Jorge Barrios. Juarez would be a good fight for me. I am ready for him and anyone else at featherweight or super featherweight."

While many fans are yet to see him in action live or on television, Chris John (41 wins, 1 draws, 22 wins by KO) defeated Mexican star Juan Manuel Marquez, currently rated top ten pound for pound, on points over the distance in Indonesia in March 2006, a result that was viewed as a significant upset. Marquez returned home unhappy with the scoring and refereeing of the fight at the Golden Gate Arena in Tenggarong, Kutai Kartanegara, Indonesia claiming that he was robbed.

"I watched Marquez beating (Joel) Casamayor and it was a good win, but maybe Casamayor is old now," observed John. "I would like to fight Marquez again. I beat him before and will beat him again. I will give him a rematch anytime. Yes, I will fight him in America. I would love to fight him at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas."

Treated like royalty and the No. 1 sporting hero to over 220 million Indonesians, 28 year-old Chris John will be attempting the 10th consecutive defence of his world title in Japan this week. The fight with 28 year-old Enoki (27 wins, 1 draws, 19 wins by KO) from Tokyo will also be the champion's fifth mandatory title defence.

"I have fought before in Japan and I like it," said John. "But I like it more when I am fighting in my own country. Enoki is a good right hand puncher. He beat Nedal Hussein, so he must be a good boxer. He will be prepared for this fight."

Trainer/manager Craig Christian was pleased with John's 120 rounds of sparring in preparation for Enoki.

"Chris made me very happy last week," said Christian. "I was singing after training. He sparred ten rounds with Jackson Asiku and Willie Kickett. They could not touch him. Chris is so smart. A very smart boxer. He knows his capabilities. I watched Enoki's fight with Skinny Hussein and he is a good all-round boxer. I think he will be too slow for Chris, who will be much faster than him. There will also be too much pressure from the event on him. Chris will build the pressure on him from the first bell and it will be too much to handle."

Chris John To Face Enoki In Japan

Posted by Donny | Sunday, August 31, 2008

It's from the boxing scene. The World Boxing Association (WBA) Featherweight Champion Chris "The Dragon" John (41-0-1, 22 KOs), from Indonesia, will put his title belt on the line againsts the unbeaten Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) ruler Hiroyuki Enoki (27-0-2, 19 KOs), a hard-punching Japanese, in Tokyo, Japan, on October 24.

By any coincidence both the champion and the challenger were born on the same day, September 14, 1979, so there's no age difference between them. Chris John, making his tenth defense since acquiring the WBA throne by defeating Oscar Leon in 2003, is regarded as a formidable kingpin, having beaten such name challengers like Juan Manuel Marquez (even by a hairline decision), Derrick Gainer, Osamu Sato and Jose Cheo Rojas.

Enoki, the current OPBF Featherweight Champion, is a game battler with stinging left hand who recently kept his regional belt by a unanimous draw (all 114-114) with highly world rated national champion Takahiro Aoh in a WBA elimination match this April. The also unbeaten Aoh will have an ambitious crack at the World Boxing Council (WBC) diadem against Oscar Larios here on October 16, just eight days earlier than Enoki.

It was surprising that the gallant challenger was so much moved by this long-anticipated title shot that he wept at the press conference and couldn't speak well before stunned people. But Enoki said, "I waited long for this opportunity, and will respond to my supporters' expectations by winning the belt." It is okay he cried at the press conference, but will never in the ring like Oliver McCall. Enoki will have a puncher's chance. But, Chris John will be his hardest opponent to be defeat.

It's not from MMA event. It's from boxing event. But the event was as interesting as MMA events. The event called World Boxing Concert was not just an ordinary boxing show. World Boxing Concert, which held in Istora Senayan, Jakarta, Indonesia last Saturday night, combined sport (boxing) and entertainment (music). This show also presented live music performances by two of the biggest name in Indonesian music industry today, top hits making band Peterpan and singer Maia. The matches themselves were so awesome, especially the main event match between the current World Boxing Association (WBA) Featherweight Champion, local boy Chris John, and his challenger, Roinet Caballero from Panama. Here are the complete results for the event:
  • Junior Flyweight (Non Title): Angky Angkota (Indonesia) defeated Christopher "Pingping" Tepora Jr. (Philippines) by unanimous decision
  • Lightweight (Non Title): Suddum Kietyongyuth (Thailand) defeated Alex Bajawa (Indonesia) by KO at Round 5
  • Middleweight (Non Title): Andreas Seran (Indonesia) defeated Sam Setu (Australia) by TKO at Round 1
